Beginner’s Happiness plot introduction
Helen, a divorcee looking for a new start, prepares to embark on an Appalachian Trail survival course. The night before departure, she tries to give the house keys to her brother Duncan, but instead meets his lifelong best friend Jack.
As Helen prepares to take the plunge, she receives a call from her ex-husband Mike, reminding her that today is their wedding anniversary. This triggers a flashback to their wedding day, where she remembers Duncan and Jack being disapprovingly present. However, Helen hung up the phone and handed the keys to Jack.
On their way to the trail from Pittsburgh, Helen visited her grandmother, Gigi, who raised them. After arriving at the designated motel in Connecticut, the group met Beckett, a young tour guide who introduced them to the hike. Helen realizes that she is one of the older participants, and Hugh points out that Jack is also part of the group.
Helen questions Jack about his presence, asking him not to interact with her during the trip and to keep their connection a secret. However, when Helen accidentally hurts her leg on a rock, Jack acts as the designated first responder to bandage her wound and congratulate her on her divorce from her ex-husband.
As they continued hiking, Helen was scolded for not following some rules and battled blisters due to ill-fitting shoes. Helen’s roommate Wendy develops a crush on Jack, but Helen finds him immature.
As time passes and everyone gets to know each other better, Hugh shares his past transformation from an aspiring actor to an insurance salesman. Alone again, Helen confronts Jack about his staring and lingering, and he admits to worrying that she might go back to her ex-husband because he doesn’t feel he’s good enough for her.
After ten days of hiking, Beckett had them retrace their route and divided them into groups based on speed. Mason, not a team player, was placed with slower hikers. When Helen’s list of targets is discovered, sparking Beckett’s ire, Jack discreetly lets her know he found it and hands her something else to read later.
Rumors spread about Jack and Wendy’s possible chemistry, and Helen becomes jealous. Meanwhile, Hugh is seriously injured while playing on a rotten log, and Helen offers to get help. She arrives at the leadership group at night and explains the situation, prompting them to find Hugh and the others at dawn.
Sharing a tent with Jack, Helen recounts her past, uncovering the tragedy of her brother’s drowning and the rupture of her family. They are both jealous and emotionally charged due to misunderstanding.
The group eventually reaches the end of the trail and returns to the motel. Helen overhears that Jack has someone waiting for him at home and decides to leave the farewell event to visit Gigi. However, before she left, she read a note from Jack expressing his love for her.
Duncan visits Gigi’s house and they decide to celebrate her birthday together. Jack’s appearance takes them by surprise, and finally, after years of repressed feelings, Helen and Jack share a long-awaited kiss, embracing the love that has been waiting to bloom between them.
