However, they soon discovered that the mansion was haunted by numerous ghosts. Seeking help regarding the paranormal, Ben is visited by priest and exorcist Father Kent, who hires him to photograph the ghosts that haunt the mansion.
Ben is initially skeptical, but his suspicions are shattered when he experiences haunting events of his own and is visited by the ghost of the sailor, who forces him to return to Gracie Manor. As the haunting escalates, Gabby, Travis and Kent also find themselves trapped in the mansion, unable to leave.
In search of answers and solutions, Ben and Kent enlist the help of Harriet, a psychic with truly supernatural abilities. Together, they steal plans for the mansion from haunted house historian Professor Bruce Davis to aid their investigation.

Inside the box is a crystal ball containing Madame Leota’s soul, which is the medium through which they attempt to make contact. Leotta reveals to them William Gracie’s tragic past. Unfortunately, an evil entity manipulates Gracie, causing him to take his own life, and Madame Leota is imprisoned within the crystal ball. In a desperate attempt to gain more insight, Harriet attempts astral projection, but inadvertently sends Ben’s soul out of his body, leading to shocking revelations about Gracie and the malevolent Hatbox Ghost entity.
Ben and Bruce then enlist the help of a sketch artist to identify the Hatbox Ghost as Alistair Crump, a wealthy heir who attempted revenge on his social peers but was ultimately beheaded by his own rebellious servants. Crump takes control of the mansion, trapping the group inside. However, Ben, Kent and Travis manage to escape.
Learning about the now-historic Crump Manor from the ghost of a sailor who stalked them, they discovered that Crump needed someone willing to give up his life and become one-thousandth of the manor’s soul to escape.
The group returns to the mansion and confronts Crump in the cemetery. Travis, who was targeted by Crump over his grief over his father’s death, played a key role in the confrontation. Through unity and determination, they return Crump to the afterlife through a ritual involving the fragment of Crump’s hat.
After the incident, many of the ghosts chose to stay at the mansion and live in peace with Gabby and Travis. Harriet regains faith in her psychic abilities, Kent becomes a true minister, Bruce embraces his newfound friendships, and Ben returns to teaching while adopting a stray cat named Tate Tot. Symbolizing his acceptance of Alyssa’s love for snacks.
The story ends with the group happily celebrating Halloween in the mansion, bringing their supernatural adventure to a happy ending.
