Early life and education
Hemanta Kumar was born in Varanasi, Benares, British India on 16 June 1920. He grew up in a culturally significant family, his maternal grandfather was a doctor, while his paternal family was from Janagarh Majipur.
He reportedly grew up in a family of five children: four brothers and one sister. Not much information is available about his biological family.

Jayant later married Bengali film actress Moushumi Chatterjee, continuing the family’s connection with the entertainment industry.
