In the first episode of Hijack, the viewers were introduced to Sam Nelson, who made an offer to the hijackers. He proposed to help them control the passengers in exchange for being allowed to return home.

Although the hijackers initially remained skeptical, Sam’s actions were quite persuasive. It was evident that Sam had a plan in mind, and he was determined to gain the trust of the hijackers and convince them that he was on their side. Sam understood that the responsibility of saving the lives of innocent passengers rested on his shoulders, and his unique skills made him the best hope for their survival. During the first episode of Hijack, Captain Robin Allen contacted the Dubai control room, expressing his belief that there was a security issue on the flight. Later, the hijackers took control of the cockpit and coerced Robin Allen into providing false information to the control room.

Abdullah, an employee at the Dubai air traffic control center, became suspicious after these events and sensed that something was amiss on the flight. He questioned Robin Allen about his use of the word “definite” when he wasn’t certain if there was a genuine problem onboard. Robin dismissed it as a misunderstanding, claiming that some intoxicated individuals had made unfounded threats, which were taken too seriously.

However, Abdullah remained unsatisfied, and shortly before the end of his shift, he overheard his superior conversing with their British counterpart. Abdullah started entertaining the possibility that the pilot had been coerced into reporting that everything was fine onboard the aircraft. Acting on his suspicion, he went to the security room and requested to see the CCTV footage. To his surprise, he discovered that Neela Kumar, who worked at the baggage security check, abruptly left her station.

Abdullah, sensing that something was wrong, asked the security officer to verify when Neela’s shift had ended. Unbeknownst to Abdullah, two members of the same gang that hijacked the plane were at Neela’s house, and they had threatened her to comply with their demands if she wanted to see her husband alive.

Neela was instructed to allow individuals carrying weapons in their hand luggage to pass without causing any commotion. Neela reluctantly complied, but upon reaching home, the hijackers murdered her and her husband. Abdullah, on his way back, received information that Neela had left early due to feeling unwell.

Worried about her, he went to her house, unknowingly walking into a dangerous situation. The two men at Neela’s house posed as house cleaners and informed Abdullah about her absence. Curious, Abdullah went upstairs and discovered the lifeless bodies of Neela and her husband.

Before he could call for help, the assailants returned and shot him as well. Until this point in Hijack Episode 2, from the United Kingdom to Dubai, everyone had dismissed the possibility of any issue on the flight, conveniently considering it a false alarm, in an effort to avoid any inconvenience. No one questioned why Robin Allen abruptly changed his statement and provided a feeble excuse, especially after intentionally raising the alarm and subsequently calling to confirm it.

Hijack Episodes 1 & 2 plot

The initial episode commences with passengers boarding the KA29 flight. In the midst of the crowd, Sam Nelson (portrayed by Idris Elba) arrives just in time, carrying only a small paper bag. Moments later, Alec (played by Justin Salinger) also arrives and is permitted to board.

Meanwhile, married couple Kate (Rocheda Sandall) and David (Marcus Garvey) sit with their two children, and a young passenger who is reading a book by Matt Haig provides them with information about luggage allocation. Due to the stress of caring for young children, Kate responds angrily to the advice. At the same time, Alec makes a phone call before the plane takes off, instructing his associate to “make the trade.”

Inside the aircraft, Sam stows his small paper bag in the overhead compartment, which contains a surprise gift for his partner, Marsha (Christine Adams). Just before the flight is about to depart, Marsha sends Sam a text message, urging him not to board the plane.

Despite Anna’s resistance, Robin becomes increasingly enraged and even resorts to physical violence against her in an attempt to force open thecockpit door. Sam discreetly retrieves his phone from his pocket and sends a text message to Marsha, informing her about the hijack. He keeps his phone hidden, recognizing the illogical nature of the hijackers’ claims (since the Wi-Fi is supposedly turned off).

Meanwhile, at Dubai Airport, Neela (Nikkita Chadha) receives a call from Senil, urging her to return home immediately. In London, Marsha prepares for an interview but becomes alarmed upon receiving Sam’s message. She informs Daniel, a detective inspector, about the situation, and their son Kai (Jude Cudjoe) believes there may be some truth to it.

Sam returns to his first-class seat and claims that he came to retrieve his phone. He then offers to assist Stuart and the hijackers in gaining control over the passengers during the long flight. Marsha and Kai inform Daniel about Sam’s true occupation as a professional negotiator. It becomes apparent that Sam has ulterior motives while seemingly offering to join forces with the hijackers.

In the second episode, titled “3 Degrees,” Sam endeavors to convince Stuart that he is on their side, expressing indifference toward the other passengers and emphasizing his desire to return to London. He suggests that the restless passengers might become unruly and pose a threat, offering his help to maintain control. Jamie notices messages on Sam’s phone but fails to find Sam’s last message, indicating that he may have deleted it before handing over his phone.

In the meantime, two middle-aged men (whom Sam conversed with earlier) attack Jaden, causing his gun to fall to the floor. Sam picks it up and, instead of shooting Stuart, hands it back to him, thereby building trust. Stuart and his accomplices restrain their hands, and Jamie releases the men wearing suits from their restraints. Back in London, Daniel contacts his ex, Zahra Gahfoor (Archie Panjabi), to verify the validity of Sam’s claim, and she agrees to assist him.

Deevia strives to maintain peace while complying with the hijackers’ demands. Sam scribbles something on a magazine sheet and hands the note to Stuart, indicating that the pilot poses a potential risk. Sam convinces Stuart to remove Robin from the cockpit, citing the autopilot system. Consequently, Stuart instructs Robin to explain how the system functions and then escorts him back to a seat.

Lewis escorts a female passenger from her seat, and she notices the two restrained men. She informs the other passengers, claiming that the pilot betrayed them, and they begin speculating about who among them may be colluding with the hijackers. Sam secretly begins playing a game on his screen and opens a chat window, enabling him to communicate covertly with Robin, ensuring the hijackers remain unaware.

Robin discusses communication with the Iraqi Air Traffic Control and their military, while Sam studies the map to determine the plane’s location. The cockpit receives a message from a Baghdad Air Traffic officer. Sam persuades Stuart to allow Robin to speak with the officer to prevent the ground from discovering the hijacking. Anna is sent to communicate with the officer, but he insists on speaking directly with the pilot. Sam encourages Robin to remove his seatbelt and approach the Baghdad officers, assuring them that their lives are not in danger.
