Hope Odidika Uzodimma (born 12 December 1958) is a Nigerian politician currently serving as governor of Imo state since 2020.

Hope Uzodinma represents the All Progressives Congress (APC) party. Uzodimma’s victory in the 2019 Imo State governorship election was confirmed by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on January 14, 2020. The ruling overturned the previous victory of the incumbent governor, Emeka Ihedioha.

Early Life & Education

Hope Uzodinma, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, was born on December 12, 1958 in Omuma, Imo State, to an Igbo family. His father, Chief Michael Uzodimma, held the Igwe title of Ozuh Omuma, while his mother was Ezinne Rose Uzodimma.

He is related to the Okoro family of Etiti-Omuma and has a brother named Uche Uzodinma who is also politically active. Uzodimma’s educational journey began at Mgbidi Secondary School in Omumu, Western Oru, Imo State, Nigeria. He pursued further education, earning a bachelor’s degree in international studies in 1982 after completing an advanced degree in transportation studies.

Additionally, Hope Uzodinma also holds a master’s degree in human relations from the school University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and a degree in political science from University of London.

Career

Hope Uzodinma’s political journey goes back to the Second Nigerian Republic. In 1983, he assumed the role of Imo State Youth Leader in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the ruling party at the time. Moving to the Third Nigerian Republic in the 1990s, Uzodinma emerged as a key figure in the United Nigerian National Congress Party.

His political trajectory was further enhanced when he assumed office as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 6 June 2011, representing Imo West Senatorial District in Imo State. Hope Uzodinma secured re-election to a second term in 2015. In a notable move in 2018, he switched allegiance from the People’s Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to pursuing the governorship seat in the 2019 Imo State election.

On January 15, 2020, along with Placid Njoku, he was sworn in as Governor of Imo State and his deputy respectively. In his inaugural address, Hope Uzodinma called on the state accountant general to provide a comprehensive financial status report spanning from May 2010 to January 2020. He further requested All permanent secretaries of state ministries provided updates on awarded contracts while suspending payments for ongoing projects.
