Why is Hope Woodard facing backlash?
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Hope Woodard is a content strategist and developer. Currently, she is filming for the dating app Bumble. Additionally, she has a sizable fan base on TikTok, where her videos have garnered over 27 million likes.
Hope, a former Peace Corps volunteer, is determined to bring about change and addresses topics close to her heart in the video, such as climate change. Hope Woodard, who has progressive beliefs, used TikTok to talk about a video she was about to make for Starbucks, which is currently the target of a global boycott.
After the Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke out on October 7, 2023, the boycott began in November 2023. It began with a now-deleted social media post by Starbucks Workers United, a union affiliated with SEIU, supporting Palestine in the context of the Israeli conflict. According to reports, the post read: “Solidarity with Palestine!”
In response, Starbucks filed a complaint, asking the union to stop using its trademark and issue an apology. Starbucks Workers United protested, claiming that Starbucks “defamed the union by implying that it supports terrorism and violence,” and it is seeking a federal court ruling in Pennsylvania allowing the company to continue continued to use his name and a similar symbol. Some Starbucks customers, outraged by this response, decided to boycott the company to protest what they saw as its anti-Palestinian stance.
Hope said in a video that she had to finish the video because no matter what, she had to pay the rent.
“The night I sent the content was the same night I found out about the boycott,” Hope explains. “I know ethically it’s not good and I have to admit it’s embarrassing but I’m not in a dire financial position to say ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this anymore.’
However, Hope affirmed that she did not go to Starbucks to comply with the boycott. She even mentioned that she recently chose Krispy Kreme over Starbucks when she was at the airport. However, this statement has confused many people.
One person commented: “Krispy Kreme is sending me. Like honey, do you want a medal?” “For me, it’s the emphasis on Krispy Kreme,” said another. Like you’re making a sacrifice?”
