The game was unveiled in a trailer on February 17, 2021, and will be available on September 9, 2022. Splatoon 3 received positive reviews for its new maps, single-player storyline, customization features, and overall gameplay mechanics.

However, it faced criticism for matchmaking issues and occasional disconnections, as well as a lack of fresh content. Despite these criticisms, “Splatoon 3” has been a huge success, with global sales of 11.71 million copies as of December 31, 2023.

This stellar performance makes it the fastest-selling game in the Splatoon series and one of the best-selling games on Nintendo Switch.

Splatoon 3 gameplay

Splatoon 3, like its predecessor, is a third-person shooter in which players play as Inklings or Octolings, wielding various weapons using colored ink as ammunition. Weapons resemble everyday items, including rollers with wide ink coverage for close combat and chargers like sniper rifles for long-range attacks.

Splatoon 3 introduces new primary, secondary, and special weapons to provide players with a variety of options. Primary weapons selected by the player can be paired with secondary weapons for additional ink-consuming secondary attacks, while special weapons require ink coverage to recharge.

Inklings and Octolings can transform into squid or octopus forms, known as “swimming forms”, allowing them to climb walls and move through ink faster. The ink of the weapon is limited, and it can be quickly replenished by immersing it in the ink in swimming form. Splatoon 3 retains all of the basic weapons from its predecessor, providing players with an enhanced and diverse combat experience.

Splatoon 3 plot

In Splatoon 3, players are recruited by old squid Craig Squid as Agent 3 to navigate a crater filled with dangerous furry ooze. They team up with their pet salmon minnows to fight against fur-mutated Octa enemies who have stolen Sprattsville’s source of energy, the Big Zapfish.

After a battle with the Octavian leader DJ Octavio, the ground opened up and the dungeon of Alterna became the Octagian base. Agent 3 meets Carly, Mary, and Captain, the protagonist of the first game. While searching for cuttlefish, they met the idol group Deep Cut and mistook them for treasure hunters.

It is revealed that Grizzco CEO Mr. Grizz has kidnapped Cuttlefish and plans to use Fuzzy Ooze to transform life into a mammal, thereby endangering the Earth. Revealing their philanthropic intentions, Deep Cut teamed up with Splatoon to thwart Mr. Grizzly’s destructive plans.

Despite the challenges, Agent 3, with the help of his allies, defeated Mr. Grizzly and saved the planet, bringing back the great Zapfish. The cuttlefish comes to life and Mr. Grizzly floats through space in the closing credits.
