The meaning of garrison:
- Battle maps typically involve capturing various garrisons ranging from towns and bridges to ruins and fortresses.
- Each garrison type has unique benefits, such as stamina saving on bridges and healing in towns.
- Placing troops in the fort before the enemy arrives prevents post-battle stun, thus eliminating waiting time.
- Checking enemy garrisons is crucial; attacking before reinforcements reach a meter can cut off more enemies.
- Likewise, waiting inside the fortress will gradually heal units, while monitoring the meter helps control the timing of attacks.
Master unit formations:
- Effectively repositioning battalion units is a key tactical skill in Unicorn Overlord.
- In two rows, a unit can have from 1 to 6 characters; attacks are usually directed against the nearest enemy in the opposite front row.
- Damage dealt or taken is generally not affected by position, unless a specific skill states otherwise.
- Creating an effective formation requires taking into account enemy skills, placing vulnerable units in the back row, and adjusting positioning.
- Changing formations is very flexible and can be done almost at any time, and can be adjusted based on enemy type.
- Consider the leader’s role in the unit, choosing speed or stamina depending on the situation.

Unicorn Overlord Development
The design concept for Unicorn Overlord was crafted by Takafumi Noma of Vanillaware in 2014, ten years before its release. Noma, encouraged by company founder George Kamiya, served as director, character designer, and lead programmer, with Wataru Nakanishi as designer and Atlus’ Yamamoto Koyasu as producer. The music, led by Basiscape’s Mitsuhiro Kaneda team, brings an immersive experience to the game.

Noma and Nakanishi developed the game concept taking inspiration from classic tactical role-playing games of the 1990s, but with the goal of delivering a unique experience. Unicorn Overlord focuses on speed, top-down perspective, player freedom, and real-time movement and combat. Noma, who was originally a programmer, showcased his illustration skills and led the character design, inspired by 14th-century European and Japanese fantasy elements. The 2D artistic design contrasts with the 3D graphics popular in the industry.
Unicorn Overlord was first teased in a short film called Thirteen Sentinels: Aegis Ring’s prologue demo, before being officially announced at a Nintendo Direct and released in a special edition that included an artbook and soundtrack. Kamitani emphasized that it is Vanillaware’s most important project and will be nearing completion in January 2023. Atlus will publish it in Japan and Sega will distribute it globally, with a full soundtrack album released alongside the game.
