How Many People Play Fortnite? A Simple Guide

Fortnite

Fortnite is an online video game produced by Epic Games and launched in 2017. It has three different versions: Fortnite Battle Royale, where up to 100 players compete to be the last one standing; Fortnite: Save the World, a cooperative game where up to four players fight off zombie-like creatures and build defenses; and Fortnite Creative, where players can create their own worlds and battle areas. Save the World and Battle Royale began as early access games in 2017, while Creative was released on December 6, 2018.

Fortnite Battle Royale has become so popular that in less than a year it has attracted more than 125 million players and is generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each month. As of December 2019, Fortnite as a whole has generated $9 billion in revenue.

You can play Save the World on macOS, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Battle Royale and Creative are available on those platforms, as well as Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch. The game also launched with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

How Many People Play Fortnite?

In 2024, Fortnite saw a massive increase in player numbers thanks to a variety of factors including Season OG, the Eminem collaboration, and the LEGO Fortnite mode. These collaborations resulted in record-breaking player numbers, with millions of players logging in every day.

With the release of Season OG, Fortnite attracted 44.7 million players in just one day, breaking records set by in-game events such as Travis Scott. In addition, the game surpassed 100 million players in November, largely due to the content of Season OG.

During the Big Bang live event, Eminem ended Season OG and launched new modes such as Festival, Rocket Racing, and LEGO Fortnite. The LEGO Fortnite mode, in particular, set a new record for the highest number of players with more than 6.6 million concurrent online users.

Epic Games reported more than 350 million registered players in 2020, rising to more than 400 million in 2021. Figures are expected to continue to grow in 2022 and 2023, and could exceed 500 million players by 2024.

Despite rumors of Fortnite’s decline, the game shows no signs of slowing down. With various game modes such as Battle Royale, Ranked, Creative, Festivals, Rocket Racing, and LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite continues to attract millions of players around the world, showing that the game is far from dead.

Fortnite Game Modes and Development

Fortnite offers three different game modes, each featuring similar graphics, art assets, and mechanics. “Save the World” is a cooperative player-versus-environment mode where four players work together to achieve a common goal, battling zombie-like husks in a post-apocalyptic world. “Battle Royale” is a player-versus-player mode where up to 100 participants compete to be the last player or team standing.

As the storm approaches, the map shrinks and the difficulty of the player’s encounters increases. “Creative” mode is a sandbox mode that gives players the freedom to create various games on their own private island. Players can search for resources and build buildings in all modes. While Battle Royale and Creative modes are free to play, “Save the World” is a paid game.

The game monetizes through V-Bucks, an in-game currency that can be used to purchase cosmetic items and battle passes. Development of Fortnite began as an internal game jam in 2011 and blends the building and shooter genres. The game’s release marked a shift to a games-as-a-service model, with Save the World becoming a paid game in June 2020.

The Battle Royale mode was developed following the success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and quickly became so popular that each mode had its own development team. The Creative mode, introduced in 2018, allows players to build and customize their own island.
