How to beat the Mulligan and Thornton boss fight in Alan Wake 2?

To defeat the Mulligan and Thornton boss battles in Alan Wake 2, follow these steps:

  • Before the fight, make sure you have a crossbow. Save shotgun and pistol ammo for this battle. Plus, upgrade your weapons and healing items.

  • In the arena, hear Mulligan and Thornton. Look for red flares to see where they are and where their shots are coming from.

  • When the battle begins, orbs will appear in the arena. Use the flashlight’s charged attack to destroy the first orb above the well.

  • One of the cultists (usually Thornton) will appear in front of you. If Mulligan shows up first, deal with him quickly with crossbow headshots and shotgun shots.

  • Thornton may be hiding in the woods on the arena ledge. While he’s in the tree, focus on finding and destroying the remaining orbs, as Mulligan and Thornton will keep coming back with the orbs intact.

  • To avoid Thornton’s rifle fire, duck when you hear him fire. He usually fires twice after reloading, then pauses briefly. Dodge shortly after the circular room, step up, and dodge again.

  • If you get hit, use healing items to restore health while continuing to destroy the orbs.

  • Once all the orbs are gone, the real Mulligan and Thornton attack together. Use your shotgun to knock Mulligan down. On normal difficulty, just shoot the upper body and face with one crossbow and four shotguns.

  • After Mulligan went down, focus on Thornton. Use the red flare to position him on the ledge and use your practiced dodge pattern to get a headshot with the crossbow. Two well-placed shots will defeat Thornton, ending the battle and leading to the next cutscene, ending Chapter Three.

Alan Wake 2 gameplay

In Alan Wake II, you play as Alan Wake or Saga Anderson in two separate single-player stories. You can choose which story to play first, but the start and end of the game are fixed at Saga and Alan respectively.

As you control these characters, you’ll explore different locations and face enemies. To fight these enemies, you need to use a flashlight and various weapons. Shining the flashlight on an enemy weakens them, but also drains their strength, so you’ll need to choose wisely when to use it.

You can also dodge when an enemy gets too close to you. In the Saga portion of the game, there is something called “Mind Place” which is like a special pause menu. Here you can connect clues to solve the main mystery and learn more about the characters.

Just like in previous Alan Wake games, you’ll find manuscript pages hinting at what’s coming next. But this time, there’s a system that lets you choose what your character says in dialogue, thus affecting how the story unfolds.
