The game was first shown in a trailer on February 17, 2021, and was released on September 9, 2022. People generally love the game, especially its new maps, single-player mode, ways to customize it, and how to fight effectively. But some people don’t like the matching and connection issues, and they feel there isn’t enough new stuff. As of December 2023, “Splatoon 3” has sold 11.71 million copies worldwide. This makes it the fastest-selling game in the series and one of the best-selling games on Nintendo Switch.
Splatoon 3 gameplay
Splatoon 3 is a game where you play as an Inkling or an Octoling, and it’s all about squirting ink. Characters fire colored ink using different weapons, which can be things like large paint rollers or sniper rifles. Each weapon has its own advantages and limitations. For example, a paint roller is great for covering large amounts of ground up close, while a sniper rifle is great for shooting opponents from a distance, but isn’t great at covering ground with ink.

In the game, you can choose between a primary weapon (for shooting) and a secondary weapon (like a secondary weapon that uses more ink). There are also special weapons that can be used after covering the ground with enough ink. Your characters, Inklings and Octolings, can transform into squids or octopuses, quickly swim through ink and climb up ink-covered walls.
This is called “swimming form”. Using this form helps refill weapons with ink ammo faster than in human form. The game has a lot of different weapons, and all the basic weapons from the previous Splatoon games are also present in Splatoon 3.
Splatoon 3 plot
After following an old squid named Craig Cuttlefish into a dangerous crater filled with plush ooze, players become Agent 3 of the new Squidmouth Jet Squad. They team up with their pet baby Salmon to fight against mutant Octavian enemies led by DJ Octavio, who accuses the cuttlefish of stealing the Big Zap.

As the story unfolds in the underground city of Alterna, Agent 3 discovers that Grizzco CEO Mr. Grizz kidnapped Cuttlefish and is behind the Zapfish theft and the Octarian army. Mr. Grizz plans to use Fuzzy Ooze to transform life into mammals and revive the Earth’s mammal population.
In a series of encounters and battles, Agent 3 works with Deep Cut to uncover Mr. Grizz’s plans for destruction. The climax of the story is a conflict aboard Altna’s rocket, in which the life of the cuttlefish appears to be drained by Mr. Grizz. The rocket is rigged to cover the Earth in fuzzy ooze, posing a threat to all life.
With the help of DJ Octavio and a transformed Smallfry, Agent 3 heroically defeated Mr. Grizz and destroyed the rocket. The great Zapfish was brought back, and the cuttlefish came to life with the help of the captain’s tears. The story ends with Mr. Grizzly floating in space during the closing credits.
