Steam world building
SteamWorld Build is a video game in which players build and manage a mining town on an alien planet. It was released on December 1, 2023 for platforms such as Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S as part of the popular SteamWorld series. In the game, players build roads, houses, and facilities designed to keep the townsfolk happy.
The game has two main parts: first, building and managing a town, and second, exploring an old abandoned mine in search of ancient technology. Players recruit miners, equip them with weapons, and gather resources to expand their town. Developed by The Station and published by Thunderful Publishing, SteamWorld Build offers a unique blend of city-building and dungeon crawling adventures.
How to make money quickly in SteamWorld Build?
The SteamWorld series always brings fresh challenges, and SteamWorld Build is no exception. This is a new addition to this ever-growing game world where players need to take care of the citizens and manage the entire city. Balance growth and resources to keep players busy. Having enough money is very important from the start, because without it you won’t be able to build much in the game.
Taxes: The Backbone of Your City
In SteamWorld Build, taxes are your main source of income. The more citizens you have, the happier they are and the more taxes they pay. First, focus on building lots of worker housing buildings and placing grocery stores nearby.
Even if you’re not actively playing the game, you can speed up your game to increase your earnings. As your town grows and meets the needs of its citizens, your passive income can soar into the thousands. Accumulate a large bank balance early and make money no longer a worry as the city develops.
Trading: converting surplus into cash
Trading leftover resources at the train station is another way to make money quickly. As you progress and your needs for more advanced buildings change, you may find yourself with excess starting resources. Use these leftover materials, such as wood and water, to conduct cash-generating transactions. This strategy makes a lot of sense when those starting resources become less useful.
Treasure Chests and Tumbleweeds: Hidden Treasures
Watch out for treasure chests in the mines and tumbleweeds on the ground. Click on them when they appear; they often contain resources that add to your inventory. You might stumble upon some extra cash, as well as gold, rubies, or other useful resources.
These windfalls can greatly support your city-building efforts. In SteamWorld Build, a combination of tax optimization, strategic trading, and hunting for hidden treasures can quickly fill your coffers, allowing you to expand your cityscape and take on challenges head-on.

How to make more money with citizens in SteamWorld Build?
In SteamWorld Build, making more money depends heavily on the satisfaction of your citizens and the services you provide them.
citizen needs
Each residential building can initially house a specific number of residents. However, this capacity increases as you build service and production buildings to serve their needs. For example, let’s say you start with worker housing, each housing 5 workers.
Catering to their needs with service shops and grocery stores, the buildings could eventually house up to ten workers. The more residents there are in a residential building, the more money it generates. For example, a worker residence initially generates +5 gold with 5 workers, but increases to +25 gold with 10 satisfied workers.
Service buildings are important
The type of service building you build has a direct impact on your income. Here are some examples:
-
Service Shop: Generates +6 for every two workers.
-
Grocery store: +5 output per four workers, +7 output per engineer.
-
Salon: +5 generated for every two engineers.
-
Surveyor’s Office: Provides +5 for every two engineers.
-
Cleaning Service Shop: +4 for every two Engineers, or +14 for every two Aristo Robots.
- Waxing Shop: Generates +16 for every two Aristobots.
increase income
There is a program called “Service Revenue” that improves cash generation capabilities. You can find it in the mines or buy it from the train station. Once obtained, you can equip it in a building slot to increase the flow of funds into your city.
SteamWorld Build Game
In SteamWorld Build, players participate in two main game phases. First, they build and manage a mining town on an alien planet. This includes building roads, houses, and amenities to meet the needs of the town’s residents, with the goal of making them happy.
Progress is measured by milestones relative to the total population. As players repair the mines, a second phase is unlocked, shifting the focus to exploring the abandoned mines. Here, they recruit miners, equip them with weapons, and collect resources, including ore, to expand the town.
Miners delve deep into the mines in search of ancient technology that might help players escape Earth. This dynamic combination of city-building and dungeon exploration creates an engaging, multi-faceted gameplay experience. SteamWorld Build is developed by The Station and published by Thunderful Publishing, and will be released on multiple platforms on December 1, 2023.

SteamWorld Build Development
SteamWorld Build is developed by a 40-person team at The Station, a studio under Thunderful Development. Series director Brjánn Sigurgeirsson oversaw development, marking the first time a SteamWorld game was not developed by an original Swedish team. The Station, previously known for its contributions to the LittleBigPlanet games, began this city-building and dungeon-exploring project in early 2020.
The developers drew inspiration from Ubisoft’s Anno series and Bullfrog Productions’ Dungeon Keeper series, aiming to seamlessly blend the game’s two distinct gameplay styles. The storyline runs parallel to SteamWorld Dig 2 and includes new and familiar characters from previous SteamWorld games.
Thunderful Development originally announced their work on four SteamWorld games in May 2022, with the SteamWorld Build codenamed “Coffee.” The game was officially released in January 2023 with a free demo.
