As players explore the vast world, they will guide Alain through towns, where they can visit blacksmiths and merchants to equip their armies. Along the way, they will encounter enemies represented by elves, adding danger to their journey.
When it comes to combat, Unicorn Overlord offers a combination of real-time action and tactical decision-making. Players can control up to six characters, each with their own unique abilities and skills. The number of units a player can deploy depends on a resource called courage, which players can earn by winning battles.
During combat, players need to strategically deploy their troops on the battlefield and use their skills to outwit their opponents. Battles can take place in a variety of environments, from open fields to bustling cities, each with its own challenges and obstacles.

Unicorn Overlord Development
Work on Unicorn Overlord began in 2014, when Vanillaware team member Takafumi Noma came up with the concept. This was about ten years before the game hit shelves. Vanillaware boss George Kamitani approached Noma after completing Dragon’s Crown in 2013. He asked Noma to make a new fantasy game, and Noma jumped at the chance.

With Kamiya’s support, Noma served as director, character designer, and lead programmer for “Unicorn Overlord.” Another guy named Wataru Nakanishi helped design the game, with Atlus’ Akiyasu Yamamoto serving as producer.
Development on Unicorn Overlord has progressed rather slowly, as Vanillaware is busy with other projects at the same time. They’re working on porting older games to new consoles, as well as a game called Thirteen Sentinels: Aegis Ring. Norma even helped program Thirteen Sentinels.
Noma worked closely with Nakanishi on how to play the game. They wanted Unicorn Overlord to feel different from Dragon’s Crown, which was more of an arcade game. Instead, they aimed to create the feel of classic tactical RPGs from the ’90s, providing players with fast-paced action and freedom.

They hope Unicorn Overlord will be a “rebirth” of the tactical role-playing game, blending old-school charm with modern ease of use. Primarily a programmer, Norma also took the lead on designing the characters and giving them his own art style. The game’s art style was established early on, drawing inspiration from classic games while keeping it fresh. The music, led by Mitsuhiro Kaneda and his Basiscape team, is designed to perfectly match the game’s atmosphere.
