Early life
Howard Stern was born on January 12, 1954 in Queens, New York City, United States, to Ben and Ray Stern.
He grew up in the Queens section of Jackson Heights with his sister Ellen Stern.
Howard Stern is an extrovert, while his sister is more reserved in her daily activities.
His father, Ben Stern, served in the ‘US Army’ before becoming a radio engineer. Howard Stern’s mother, Ray Stern, worked as an office worker before becoming a respiratory therapist.

His family moved to Roosevelt, New York, a year after his birth, to complete his education. He attended ‘Washington-Rose Elementary School’, then ‘Roosevelt High School’. He also attended Hebrew school and was given the name Tzvi, a popular Jewish name.
As a child, he was fascinated by puppets and often performed puppet shows for his friends to entertain them. He also learned piano and formed a band with his friends called ‘Electric Comic Book.’ He was the lead pianist and lead singer of the band.
Howard Stern also went to his father’s recording studio and was inspired by radio personalities like Bob Grant and Brad Crandall. From the age of five, he wanted to be a radio announcer and convinced his father to build a fake recording studio in his basement, where he entertained his friends.
When Howard Stern was 15, his family moved to Rockville, where he witnessed the rise of black community dominance. He attended ‘South Side High School’ in Rockville, where he graduated in 1972.
He went on to earn a degree in communications at Boston University, where he worked at the school’s radio station. He started out playing music and reading the news to audiences before moving on to hosting interviews and live shows.
The Federal Communications Commission finally granted him a first-class radio operator’s license. In 1975, he landed his first professional position at the WNTN Network, Massachusetts.

Howard Stern attended Boston University, majoring in broadcasting and minoring in English and Speech. He received his degree magna cum laude in communications in 1976. He worked at WTBU, the university’s radio station, co-hosting a comedy and interview show.
In 1975, Howard Stern graduated from the Radio Electronics Technical Institute in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with a first-class radio telephone operator’s license. All radio stations required a license, which helped him land his first job at WNTN in Newton, Massachusetts.
