HP Envy x360 13 vs. Dell XPS 13: the best tiny laptop?

The laptop market is starting to lean toward 14-inch laptops and away from 13-inch laptops, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great examples of the latter. Dell XPS 13 9315 and HP Envy x360 13 are models worth considering.

Both laptops are relatively affordable and offer great performance, design, and amenities. But only one can be crowned the best. Who wins in this match?

Both laptops are priced similarly, you can call them budget laptops or slightly expensive mid-range machines. The Envy x360 13 starts at $900 for a Core i5-1230U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512G SSD, and a 13.3-inch Full HD+ 16:10 IPS touchscreen. The most you’ll spend is $1,300 for a Core i7-125oU, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 2.8K OLED panel.

The XPS 13 9315 has fewer configurations. It starts at $850 for the Core i5-1230U, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and Full HD+ non-touch IPS display. At the high end, it costs $1,399 for the Core i7-1250U, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD and the same touch screen.

You get more RAM at the higher end with the XPS 13 9315 for $100 more, but the Envy x360 13 gives you a beautiful OLED display. We give the price and configuration win to HP.

The XPS 13 9315 has been completely redesigned, ditching the glass or carbon fiber palm rest and replacing it with an all-aluminum body in Sky or Umber. It retains its elegant appearance but has a simpler and more modern design. It’s an attractive, if very minimalist, laptop. The Envy x360 13 is more gorgeous, with complex angles complementing simple lines, as well as Natural Silver and Sunset Black color schemes. It’s also quite minimalist, so although it looks different from the XPS 13, it can’t be considered better. The XPS 13 9315 uses smaller screen bezels, giving it a more modern feel.

The XPS x360 13’s large bottom—necessary to accommodate convertible, tent, multimedia, and foldable 2-in-1 tablet modes—makes it a deeper laptop, At the same time, it is also thicker and heavier. However, the differences aren’t huge, and both laptops are small enough to be easy to transport.

Both laptops have sturdy construction that resists flexing, bending, or twisting. It’s great considering the reasonable price. Each has a hinge that can be opened with one hand, and they have the same general build quality.

Both have great keyboards, wide key spacing, and nice keys. Its switches are fast, precise, and comfortable for long typing sessions. The same can be said for the similarly sized, comfortable, and precise mechanical touchpad. The biggest difference is that the Envy x360 13 comes standard with a touchscreen and supports Windows Inking-compatible pen input.

Connectivity is further enhanced by the Envy x360 13, which offers two USB-A ports in addition to two Thunderbolt 4 ports, along with a microSD card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack. The XPS 13 offers only two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Both devices feature the latest wireless connectivity available.

Finally, the Envy x360 13 uses a 5MP webcam that can record 1080p video, which is a big improvement over the 720p version of the XPS 13 9315. Both have infrared cameras that support Windows 11 Hello.

Efficiency

Both laptops use Intel’s 12th generation 9-watt U-series CPU with 10 cores (two performance cores and eight efficiency cores) and 12 threads. The only difference is in the Turbo’s maximum frequency, so we shouldn’t expect a huge difference in performance.

However, the Envy x360 13 performed much better in our benchmarks, whether in Balanced Mode or Performance Mode. Both laptops are fast enough for typical productive workflows, but the Envy has more headroom for more demanding users. With only integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, both laptops do not provide a good gaming experience.

But HP offers a much sharper 2.8K OLED display, delivering extremely wide and accurate colors, plenty of brightness, and deep OLED contrast. It’s a much better display not only for productive work but also for media creators and consumers. And it only costs $60 more than the standard IPS offering.

Portability

The XPS 13 9315 clearly benefits from the slower CPU, as it delivered much better battery life during our web browsing tests despite its smaller battery. We haven’t passed our video playback test yet, but with its lower-resolution IPS display, it may outperform the Envy x360 13 with its higher-resolution OLED panel. Both laptops are easy to transport, but the XPS 13 9315 will last you longer on a single charge.

Speed, versatility and display quality help HP win

Both are excellent laptops for the price, offering exceptional build quality with good performance and battery life, great keyboards and touchpads, and miniature bodies.

But the Envy x360 13 has some advantages. First, it’s faster and more maneuverable thanks to its 360-degree convertible 2-in-1 shape. It also has better connectivity and its existing OLED display is far superior. The XPS 13 9315 has better battery life, but overall, the Envy x360 13 is a more complete laptop, a better value.
