As a child of taxi driver and bread seller parents, he must have experienced the hustle and bustle of Lagos.
Traffic jams, traffic jams, and daily jostling at bus stops, train stations, etc.
He is also a second-hand clothes seller in Lagos after extensive interviews with his neighbors.
Growing up in Lagos, Hushpuppi must have attended public schools for her primary and secondary education.
As the famous Nigerian saying goes, “one can make money and ruin lives”, he then migrated to Malaysia in search of greener pastures.
Career
Internet celebrity, Hushpuppi became successful and wealthy after moving to Malaysia. His lavish lifestyle and wealth made him famous and a star on Instagram. His posts involve luxury cars, private jets, pictures and elite clubs, clothes from the most fashionable brands like Gucci.
Nicknamed “The Dark Horse of Nigeria” by his social media fans, he is today one of the most famous Nigerian émigrés with over 2.5 million followers on Instagram.
Exactly how he made his money remains a mystery to everyone. The media can only say that a new pope opened up in his life when he decided to move to Malaysia.
Hushpuppi describes himself as a real estate developer. How he makes the money to support his lavish lifestyle is not fully known. He has joked that he is a beggar by trade. The source of Hushpuppi’s wealth remains a mystery, but many believe he has invested in real estate and other lucrative businesses.
Hushpuppi’s wealth attracted the attention of the anti-crime agency, the EFCC. Investigations into how he made his money led to his arrest. The public has not been able to establish the legal source from which he made his money.
After several investigations, Hushpuppi was arrested in the United States and charged with conspiracy to launder proceeds from business email fraud and other frauds, including schemes to defraud a U.S. law firm.
Hushpuppi’s real name is Raymond Igbalode.
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju made headlines in 2018 when he asked the EFFC to investigate Hushpuppi. He accused Hushpuppi of being a “yahoo boy” – a term for men who commit online crimes like the infamous 419 scam.
“I want to commend the EFCC for this good work. However, more needs to be done on this issue. There are more yahoo boys in Abuja. And one more reminder. There is a guy called Hush Puppy or something like that. Take a closer look,”
Deji tweeted after police arrested 57 youths accused of being yahoos at clubs in Ikoyi.
Hushpuppi was arrested along with 11 others in six simultaneous raids. Detectives seized more than Dh150 million (about $40 million) in cash, 13 luxury cars worth Dh25 million ($7 million), 15 memory storage devices, 21 laptops, 47 smartphones, five external hard drives and 800,000 emails of potential victims, along with suitcases full of cash.
The FBI was also the primary agency responsible for his arrest, and subsequent investigations revealed his entire transnational cybercrime operation.
With all the investigations by the EFCC and FBI, Gal Pissetzky (Hushpuppi’s lawyer) claims that his client got all his assets legally from the designer brands, which used Ray’s influence on social media to promote their brands.
Mr Pissetzky, who knows his client well, told the BBC that the US did not have the authority to transport his client from Dubai. He is not a US citizen, so the US did not have the authority to take him.
Mr Pissetzky told the BBC that there was no extradition, no legal action taken, no court documents filed by the FBI, just a phone call to the FBI.
