Early life and education
Huw Edwards is 62 years old. He was born on 18 August 1961 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales, to Aerona Patheroe and Hywel Teifi Edwards. Huw, along with his sister Meinir, was raised in a Welsh-speaking family and educated at Bryn Celynnog School in Pontypridd.
Edwards graduated with first-class honours in French from University College, Cardiff, in 1983. He also holds a PhD in Welsh non-Orthodox oratory from Llanelli and London from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, awarded in 2018.
Personal life
Huw Edwards is married to Vicky Flind, a television producer. They have five children: Dan, Sammy, Amos, Hannah and Rebecca. He is a Christian and attends church every week.
Edwards has been open about his struggles with depression and has received treatment in the past. In July 2023, Edwards was admitted to hospital for a serious mental health episode.
Career
Huw Edwards had a brief stint at Swansea Sound before joining the BBC as a news trainee in 1984. He became parliamentary correspondent for BBC Wales in 1986. From 1994 to January 2003, Edwards presented BBC Six O’Clock News. He became the main presenter of Ten O’Clock News on BBC One in January 2003.
Edwards has also presented various special programmes, such as the Festival of Remembrance and led the BBC’s commentary team at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
