Early life
On 14 May 1966, Hyacinth Alia was born in the Benue State LGA of Mbangur, Mbadede and Vandeikya.
He completed his primary education at St. Francis Primary School in Agidi, Mbatiav and Gboko.
His spiritual journey began when he enrolled at St. James Minor Seminary of Makurdi in 1983. He was then allowed to continue his studies at St. Augustine Major Seminary in Jos.
In 1987, he earned an Associate of Arts in Religious Studies and in 1990, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology.
To further his education, he enrolled at Fordham University in the Bronx borough of New York City, where he graduated with a Master of Arts in Religious Education (Psychology and Counseling) in 1999.
Alia also holds a master’s and doctorate in biomedical ethics from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania, USA.
Career
In July 1990, Hyacinth Alia was ordained a Catholic priest. Bishop Athanasius Atule Usuh, the revered spiritual leader of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, presided over the ordination ceremony.
After this momentous event, Hyacinth Alia embarked on a religious journey, accepting her calling to become a pious servant of the Catholic Church.
Father Hyacinth Alia became a transmitter of God’s grace and an instrument of His love and compassion through his priestly ordination.
He devoted himself to his ministry, pursuing Catholic principles and trying to live a life of faith, humility and service.
In May 2022, Alia ran for governor of Benue State on the APC platform. In a swift response, the state church hierarchy explicitly stated that the Catholic Church’s canon law prohibits priests from active political participation, leading to his suspension from the priesthood.
Alia sees his suspension as one of the sacrifices he will make for “good plan” to make the state a reality.
He also stressed his determination to lift the country out of poverty.
Hyacinth Ali was declared the winner of the governorship election in Benue State on March 20. He received 473,933 votes, defeating Titus Uba of the PDP who received 223,913 votes.

Since Hyacinth Alia is not married, Benue State is the only state in the federation without a First Lady.
