‘I did not vote for Trump’

Chappell Roan is clarifying her previous comments regarding the upcoming presidential election.

Sharing on Tiktok on September 24, Roan said her comment was “taken out of context”.

“I have encouraged people to use critical thinking skills to learn about who they are voting for, who they are voting for, and to ask questions, but this is often taken completely out of context,” she said.

Previously, Roan received backlash for comments she made in an interview with Guardian where she emphasized her nonpartisan stance, saying she “has a lot of problems with our government in every way”.

“There are problems on both sides. I encourage people to use their critical thinking skills, use their vote – vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city,” Roan continued.

Because of his neutral stance, many on social media assumed Roan was a supporter of Donald Trump.

“Chappell Roan played the ‘both sides’ card so stupidly and actually endorsed Trump. She could have endorsed someone else or just continued to not make any statements, but playing that card is an insult to her LGBTQIA+ fans in my opinion,” one comment read.

Chappell Roan by playing the disastrously stupid “both sides” card has actually supported Trump. She could have supported someone else or just continued to not make any statements, but playing that card is an insult to her LGBTQIA+ fans, in my opinion.

“This is Chappell Roan’s third time voting in a presidential election and all of them have been in the Trump era. Younger generations don’t see him as an existential threat because he’s always been a part of politics in their adult lives,” another added.

However, Roan denied this claim in a TikTok video she posted, in which she shared that she would not vote for Trump.

“Hear me out if you’re still wondering: No, I did not vote for Trump, and yes, I will always question those in power, and those who make decisions for others. I will fight for what is right and what I believe in. That has always been at the heart of my project, and I’m sorry you fell for the clickbait,” she said.

Elsewhere on TikTok, Roan recited the entire quote and explained that while many people misinterpreted her comment as passive political neutrality, she believes asking questions is important.

“Question whether someone tweeted something about something else was true. It’s important to question, because that’s how I think we’re going to move forward,” she said.

“This is my third time voting and the world is changing so quickly, I want to be part of the generation that makes positive changes, because we need it,” Roan added.

“Actions speak louder than words and actions speak louder than testimonials,” she concluded.

News of Roan’s vote comes amid a wave of celebrities expressing support for Kamala Harris, including Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, who have both issued their own statements on the matter.
