early life

On September 6, 1972, Winston Elba, a Sierra Leone Creole who worked at Ford’s Dagenham plant, and Eve Elba, a Ghanaian woman, gave birth to Idris Elba in Hackney, London.

Idris Elba’s parents met and married in Sierra Leone before moving to the UK. Idris Elba grew up in Hackney and East Ham, and shortened his name to “Idris” when he began his acting career at Canning Town High School.

In 1986, he began helping an uncle run a wedding DJ business, and within a year, he and other friends formed their own DJ company.

Idris Elba dropped out of school in 1988 and received a £1,500 grant from the Prince’s Trust to audition for the National Youth Music Theatre.
