Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is a Somali-American politician who has been serving as the United States representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019.
She is a member of the Democratic Party and is known as the first Somali-American, the first naturalized citizen from Africa, and one of the first two Muslim women (along with Rashida Tlaib) to serve in the United States Congress.
Prior to his election to Congress, Omar served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019, representing part of Minneapolis.

Early life and education
Ilhan Abdullahi Omar was born on October 4, 1982 in Mogadishu, Somalia. She was raised by her parents Nur Omar Mohamed and Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, and she is the youngest of seven siblings, including her older sister Sahra Noor.
However, the names of her other five siblings are unknown. Omar attended Thomas Edison High School, where she graduated in 2001, and was a student organizer.
She went on to graduate from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a BA in political science and international studies. Additionally, Omar is a Policy Fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.

Omar began her professional career as a community nutrition educator and later served as a campaign manager and child nutrition outreach coordinator for the state of Minnesota. Her first foray into politics was managing a city council campaign, followed by a senior policy aide.
However, her path to political office was not without obstacles as she was attacked during a controversial caucus meeting in her district in 2014. Despite this, Omar persevered and became the first Somali-American elected to the United States Congress.

In her personal life, Omar has been married three times and has three children: Isra Hirsi, Adnan Hirsi and Ilwad Hirsi. She was first engaged to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002 and the couple has two children together.
However, they divorced on religious grounds in 2008. In 2009, Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, but they divorced on religious grounds in 2011 and she reconciled with Hirsi, with whom she had her third child in 2012.
Elmi and Omar were legally divorced in 2017 and she and Hirsi were legally married in 2018. However, in October 2019, Omar filed for divorce from Hirsi, and the process was finalized in November 2019.
In March 2020, Omar married Tim Mynett, a political consultant whose political consulting firm, E Street Group, received $2.78 million in contract money from Omar’s campaign during the 2020 election cycle.
