Omotara Akanni, who became an online sensation with Motara (Motaraaa) or TheLadyMotara, is a Nigerian influencer, socializer, content creator and entrepreneur.

She became one of the most talked about influencers in Nigeria in late November 2020, after a video of her taunting a child beggar with a can of Fearless energy drink while sitting in a car went viral.

Early life

Motara was conceived on October 27, 1995 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Born and raised in a small village in Ibadan by a financially strapped mother, Motara faced a bit of hardship growing up.

She has explained on numerous occasions through a series of tweets and posts that she did not grow up in poverty but was poor.

Her mother is a street vendor who has done everything she can to ensure she and her brother have a stable life since her father abandoned them when she was just 6 years old.

Education

Motara completed his primary and secondary school education in Ibadan in Oyo State.

She attended Ibadan Polytechnic where she obtained a degree in Microbiology.

Career

Motara was not born into luxury, so she had to put most of her dreams on hold from the start. She worked hard after graduating with the help of her mother.

She talked all about, “If I get these degrees, I can secure my future.” because she was raised by a mother who was not created.

Omotara while in school was involved in several social activities including influencing. She was respected for her background which was always shared on social media through her tweets.

She is ranked among the influential women in Nigeria, capable of making an impact on the new generation.

Thanks to that, she has achieved many contracts, from ambassador contracts to becoming a member of large organizations.

The feat made headlines in late November when she posted a video on WhatsApp mocking a child beggar, claiming it was just for fun. The video immediately received unhealthy criticism from her contacts.

Due to the backlash, she quickly took down the video, and soon after the video was taken down, it appeared on Twitter. The video immediately became a global issue as it was tagged as “Inhumane and against the moral standards of society”.

The viral video has trended nationwide and is also trending in many other countries, including the United States (USA) and France.

The video was also featured on top sites like BBC and Worldstarhiphop.

As the video went against all moral standards globally and was widely criticized, Motara lost most of her endorsement deals and was cut from most of her work. Her Twitter account @Motaraaa was also suspended.

She opened another Twitter account @motaraaaa1 to apologize for her actions as quoted below;

I, Motara truly regret my actions which caused my life to fall apart right before my eyes…. never expected this ☹😢😓

I got my account suspended, my endorsement contracts lost…. my reputation lost internationally. I promise to do better for the world.

What was supposed to be a normal outing has now become my end.
