Is Field of Dreams Based on a True Story? Plot, Cast and Where to Watch

Is “Field of Dreams” based on a true story?

The movie “Field of Dreams” is not entirely based on a true story, but is inspired by some real events and adapted from the 1982 book “Shoeless Joe” by Canadian novelist WP Kinsella. While the film has fictional elements, its essence comes from Kinsella’s work and was influenced by real historical figures and baseball players.

Kinsella’s novel centers on a farmer who hears a voice telling him to build a baseball diamond in a cornfield. The character was inspired by the legendary “Black Sox” scandal of 1919, in which several Chicago White Sox players were accused of throwing World Series baseballs.

Land of Dreams plot

Ray Kinsella lives on a corn farm in Iowa with his wife Annie and daughter Karin. He was troubled by his estranged relationship with his late father, John, who loved baseball. Ray worries that he is growing old without achieving anything meaningful. One night, Ray was in his cornfield when he heard a mysterious voice say, “If you build it, he will come.”

He saw a baseball diamond in a cornfield, and the legendary “Shoeless” Joe Jackson was standing there. Annie believed in the vision and agreed to let him convert part of the cornfield into a baseball diamond, even though it would jeopardize their finances. While building the ballpark, Ray told Karin about the 1919 Black Sox scandal. A few months passed before Shoeless Joe and the other Black Sox players showed up again.

Anne’s brother Mark cannot see the players and warns them of their poor financial situation. Ray later associated the voice with Terence Mann, a writer whose dreams were related to his father and baseball. He persuaded Mann, who had become a recluse, to watch a game. During their journey, they meet “Moonlight” Graham, a doctor who once played baseball. Ray and Mann eventually met young Graham and played a game.

Back home, Mark asks Ray to sell the farm, but Karin suggests that people would pay to watch baseball games there. Mann agreed and the farm was saved. Graham saves Karin’s life and once again becomes Dr. Graham, fulfilling his medical mission. Mann and Shoeless Joe enter the cornfield and Ray’s father appears. They had a harvest, many people came to watch the baseball game, fulfilling the prophecy.
