However, despite being a critically acclaimed card strategy game, Legends of Runeterra still faces financial challenges, with development and support costs higher than the revenue it generates. To address this issue, Riot Games is making changes to the Legends of Runeterra team, downsizing and re-emphasizing Road to Champions.
Eric Shen (also known as Riot Shen1138) will lead this realigned team. Hopefully, focusing on Path of Champions will lead to a more sustainable business model for Legends of Runeterra. Riot Games has yet to share an update roadmap for Legends of Runeterra, but they have scheduled a chat with key figures for February 2, including Dave Guskin, who will step down as executive producer and game director positions, but will remain at Riot.
This chat may provide more insight into the future direction of Legends of Runeterra, but as of now, there’s no indication that the game will be shutting down in 2024.

Legends of Runeterra
Legends of Runeterra (LoR) is a digital card game produced and published by Riot Games in 2020. Taking inspiration from the popular card game Magic: The Gathering, the developers aimed to create a similar game with a lower barrier to entry. The game has been free-to-play since its launch in April 2020, with revenue coming from optional cosmetic purchases. Players can enjoy the game on Microsoft Windows, iOS, and Android platforms.

In LoR, players compete in one-on-one matches, trying to reduce their opponents’ health to zero using a variety of cards. The cards are divided into ten different areas, each with a unique play style. One interesting aspect is the game’s combat pacing, with players alternating between attacking and defending each turn.
The game incorporates characters from League of Legends, Riot Games’ multiplayer online battle arena. The fictional world of Runeterra is enriched through short stories, comics, and animated series that add depth and theme to the game’s cards. Critics praised Legends of Runeterra for its player-friendly progression system, easy-to-understand gameplay, and impressive visuals, earning the game multiple industry awards.
Legends of Runeterra gameplay
Legends of Runeterra is a digital card game pitted against two players, each starting with a Nexus with 20 health points. The goal is to bring your opponent’s Nexus to zero health to win. Players have four cards in a hand and can choose to replace any card with a random card from the deck. Each round, players on both sides draw a card and spend mana to play the card, which increases each round, up to ten cards.

One unique aspect is the pace of combat, dictated by “attack markers” indicating which players can attack and who can defend. Each round players alternate between attacking with a sword or defending with a shield. Some cards allow attacks even without tokens.
Cards in the game belong to specific regions, and a deck can contain cards from up to two regions, each with its own playstyle. Unlike other card games, there are no neutral cards available in any deck. The three card types are champion cards, follower cards, and spell cards. Champions representing League of Legends characters can be upgraded, transforming into more powerful versions. Unit cards, both champion and non-champion, have attack and health statistics that determine damage dealt and stamina.
Spell cards vary in speed—slow, fast, burst, or focused—affecting how long they take to be played and how your opponent reacts. The Monuments of Power expansion introduces landmarks, unique cards with effects and countdown mechanics, and play using regular unit mana.
