Is Trey Gowdy Curt Gowdy’s son?
To answer the question simply, no, the former South Carolina congressman is not the son of famed sportscaster Curt Gowdy. Although Trey and Curt share the same last name, Curt, who was 86 when he died in 2006, was almost the same age as Trey’s father.
Are Trey Gowdy and Curt Gowdy related?
Trey Gowdy was born in Greenville, South Carolina while growing up in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Curt, on the other hand, was born in Green River, Wyoming, United States, the son of Ruth and Edward “Jack” Gowdy.
Born in Green River, Wyoming, Curtis Edward (Curt) Gowdy moved to Cheyenne at the age of six. He was the state’s leading scorer in high school basketball in the 1930s. He was sports editor of the high school newspaper as a child, demonstrating his early interest in media.
Curt enrolled at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where he played tennis and basketball for three years as a cowboy and was a 5’9″ (175 cm) tall on the basketball team. He was also a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He joined the Army in 1942 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after earning a degree in business statistics.
Curt intended to train to become a fighter pilot, but his Army Air Corps service was cut short by a herniated disc in his back from an earlier sports accident, forcing him to be medically discharged in 1943. For many years, Gowdy continued to suffer from chronic back pain.

In September 1945, after living in Cheyenne for a while, he accepted a job offer from CBS radio station KOMA in Oklahoma City. He was hired primarily to broadcast Oklahoma State basketball games and college football for Oklahoma, which was then led by newly hired Bud Wilkinson (then coached by Hank Iba).
During 1947–1948, Curt called games for the Texas League Oklahoma City Indians on KOCY in addition to reporting basketball and football on KOMA. Bob Murphy, an Oklahoma City sportscaster, replaced Gowdy when he announced in early 1949 that he would leave Oklahoma for a job in New York.
Talking about his married life, Curt was married to Geraldine (Jerre) Dawkins. The couple had three children: Cheryl Ann Gowdy, Curtis Edward Gowdy Jr. and Trevor Gowdy. Curt died at the age of 86 on February 20, 2006 in Florida after a long battle with leukemia.

Coming back to the details of his parents, Trey’s father, Dr. Hal Gowdy Jr. is a licensed pediatrician in Charleston, South Carolina. He is licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. He completed his medical education at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1964.
In March 2011, Dr. Hal was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in the state of South Carolina. The award recognizes a person’s lifetime achievements and contributions to the state.
Hal spent three years as a student at the University of South Carolina. He then joined the school’s medical school, where he earned his degree in 1964. He completed his internship at Greenville Hospital before serving in the United States Air Force from July 1965 to July 1967 as a captain.
Hal moved to Atlanta after his time in the Air Force to complete his pediatric residency at Emory University School of Medicine. He returned to Spartanburg after completing his residency and joined the Pediatric Clinic there. He was a practicing pediatrician before retiring in 1992 after 23 years of practice.
After retiring, Hal moved to Florence to serve as Pee Dee County Health Director. He successfully merged the two counties, increasing childhood vaccination rates in the two counties from 50% to over 90%.
Hal was successful in reaching out to the community to establish public-private health care partnerships. He returned to Spartanburg after retiring as medical director.
Trey’s mother, Novalene, graduated from Winthrop University. She is now retired and 83 years old. She and her husband currently live in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
