Early life and education
Jackson Mthembu was born on 5 June 1958 at Schoongezicht Farm in the Emalahleni District of Mpumalanga, South Africa. He grew up and received his early education in the same province.
His mother, Rosie Nantoni Mthembu, played a major role in his upbringing. Jackson Mthembu has two siblings, Michael Mthembu and Mandla Mthembu. Despite being a public figure, he has kept his father’s identity a secret, not revealing his details.
His educational journey began at Schoongezicht American Board Elementary Schooland he attended Kromkrans Farm School at some point. After completing his primary education, Jackson Mthembu proceeded to Elukhanyisweni Secondary School in Emalahleni, where he was recognized for his leadership skills.
He pursued higher education at University of Fort Hare after graduating from high school. However, in 1980, he faced expulsion from college for actively opposing apartheid policies.
Career
In 1976, Jackson Mthembu joined the African National Congress (ANC) and became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Despite his dedication, he faced numerous arrests and detentions by the apartheid government. After the end of apartheid, Mthembu entered the political arena and was elected to the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature in 1994. He served as MEC for Transport from 1997 to 1999.
In 1999, Mthembu moved to the South African Parliament and was recognized as the Speaker of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2014. In 2014, due to his expertise, he was appointed as the national spokesperson for the ANC.
In 2019, he assumed the position of Minister in the Presidency. Unfortunately, on 21 January 2021, at the age of 62, he died of COVID-19. Jackson Mthembu, known for his eloquence and unwavering loyalty to the ANC, democracy and freedom, was highly respected in South African politics. His passing is a great loss to the country, which is mourning the loss of a beloved public figure.
Personal life
Jackson Mthembu was married to Thembi Mthembu and was the father of six children: three daughters, Thuli Mthembu, Nokhwezi Mthembu and Khabo Mthembu, and three sons. Tragically, their daughter, 25-year-old Nokhwezi Mthembu, committed suicide on 20 March 2019, at their home in Pelican Park Village in Cape Town. He was previously married to Pinkie Selolo.
The Mthembu family has recently suffered another devastating loss with the passing of Thembi Mthembu. Her passing was announced by family spokesperson Artwel Mthembu. Thembi Mthembu passed away on 14 April 2022, after battling illness for several weeks at a medical facility in Pretoria. Described as a kind and loving person, her death was a devastating blow to her remaining six children, including her eldest daughter Nokhwezi, who tragically lost her life in 2019 in an apparent suicide at the politician’s Pelican Park, Cape Town, home.
