The Story of Jamal Hinton and Grandma Wanda Dench

In 2016, Wands Dench sent a text message to her 24-year-old nephew inviting him to Thanksgiving. But her nephew changed his number and the message ended up in the hands of Jamal Hinton, a high school senior, in November 2016. There was confusion at first, so they shared selfies of each other to clear up the error.

However, Jamal asked Wanda if he could come over for dinner, to which Wanda texted him back, “Of course. That’s what grandmas do… to feed people,” ABC News reports. Two days after the text was sent, Hinton met Dench in person and she formally invited him and his family to Thanksgiving dinner. Hinton happily accepted, and thus began a new tradition.

Since then, they have built a friendship that has lasted nearly five years.

Since then, Jamal has made attending Wanda’s Thanksgiving dinner a tradition, documenting each gathering on his social media at Wanda’s Arizona home.

I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want to get to know this guy.'”
