Early life

Alexander was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 23, 1959, to Jewish parents. He grew up in Maplewood and Livingston, New Jersey and graduated from Livingston High School. He changed his mind about pursuing Theater after Magician.

He went on to study theater at Boston University but dropped out after his professor told him he would never become an actor. He took a full-time acting job in New York City and the University awarded him an honorary degree in 1995.

Alexander’s professional journey began when he started out as an accomplished dancer and singer and appeared in Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Merrily We Roll Together’ and Kander & Ebb’s ‘The Rink’.
