Early life and education
Jeanette Aw Ee-Ping was born on 28 June 1979 in Singapore. She is a native of Quanzhou, Fujian Province, and is of Chinese descent. She has two older brothers and sisters. Jeanette Aw grew up in an English-speaking family and rarely uses the local dialect in her conversations.
She was lucky because her parents supported her. She was introverted and carefree since childhood, and was “the kind of girl who liked reading, writing and painting.”
Jeanette Aw was a school prefect and model student at Raffles Girls’ Primary School, Crescent Girls’ School, National Junior College and the National University of Singapore.
Her best subjects in O Levels were English Literature and English and she achieved an A in Arts. Jeanette Aw participated in gymnastics in primary school, dance in secondary school and swimming in junior college.
Jeanette Aw began ballet training at age 13 and danced almost every day until she signed her first performing contract. She also trained for a junior college girls group and played saxophone in a secondary school wind ensemble. While at university, Aw served as director of the National University of Singapore Dance Company.

In 2000, Jeanette Aw participated in Route to Glamour, a talent search competition held in Singapore and Malaysia by the now-defunct television network SPH MediaWorks, and beat more than 5,000 applicants to become the winner.
She won the “Best Newcomer” and “Best Actor” awards for her performance in a Taiwanese TV series. In early 2002, she left SPH MediaWorks to complete her studies and subsequently joined Hype Records, and in May 2002, she signed as a Mediacorp artist.
