Career

While still a student, Jeff Radebe joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1976. The ANC then sent him to Tanzania in 1977, where he worked as a reporter for a radio station in Dar es Salaam. However, after the ANC’s covert mission failed in 1986, Radebe was detained and the Apartheid government used the Terrorism Act to sentence him. After being convicted, he was imprisoned for 10 years on Robben Island but was fortunately released in 1990 after 12 days of hunger strike.

In 2009, Jeff Radebe assumed the role of Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development of South Africa. During his tenure, he successfully implemented the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and played a key role in shaping the country’s new constitution. In addition, Radebe also played a key role in the prosecution of Jacob Zuma, the former South African president who is facing corruption charges.

In 2014, Jeff Radebe resigned as Minister of Justice and moved to become Minister in the Presidential capacity, serving until 2018. He then took on the role of Minister of Energy in 2018 but eventually resigned from this position in 2019.
