Career

Jerry John Rawlings was a Ghanaian military leader and politician. In 1979, he led a failed coup against the military government.

Even though he was imprisoned, he still received widespread support thanks to his charisma and promise to fight corruption.

In June 1979, he was released from prison in a successful military coup and briefly led the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC).

The AFRC aimed to purge the country of corruption, and Rawlings executed former heads of state and other military leaders for their involvement in corruption.

In 1979, Jerry Rawlings overthrew the military government in power in Ghana and returned power to the civilian government led by Hilla Limann.

However, in 1981, Rawlings staged another coup on December 31, dissatisfied with the civilian government’s progress.

He then established the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC), a civil-military government of which he was president. The constitution was suspended during this time, and political parties were banned.

In 1992, under pressure from both at home and abroad, Jerry Rawlings lifted the ban on political parties in Ghana.

This move led to the formation of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party. Although the 1992 presidential election was considered flawed, it marked the beginning of the transition to a democratic government in Ghana.

Rawlings served two terms as democratically elected president while he continued to implement economic liberalization policies.
