Early life
James Edward Allen was born on June 18, 1985 in Milton, Delaware, to James and Angela, but moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2007. He lived in poverty for most of his early years in Nashville and often lived out of his car.
American Idol
Allen auditioned for the tenth season of American Idol but was eliminated before the live voting round. During one of the group rounds, Allen performed with Colton Dixon and became friends with Scotty McCreery, who went on to win the competition.
After the release of Allen’s debut album, the two reconciled and toured together. In late 2022, Allen revealed that he would be joining American Idol as a guest mentor for its 20th season.

In 2016, Allen signed a publishing deal with Wide Open Music, the songwriting imprint of singer-songwriter Ash Bowers. He signed to Broken Bow Records’ Stoney Creek label in 2017 and released his self-titled debut EP.
The decision to sign Allen was one of the quickest the label has ever made, according to the company’s executive vice president. “Blue Jean Baby,” a tune from the EP, was added to Spotify’s “United States Viral 50” chart.
Allen’s first official song, “Best Shot” was released in early 2018. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2018, marking him as the first black artist to have a debut single top that chart.
Allen credits his grandmother and his four-year-old son as the inspiration for the song’s title and main theme. His debut album, Mercury Lane, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay list.
In 2019, he collaborated with Abby Anderson on a cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow,” which was later adapted into a video. For his new EP, “Bettie James” Allen collaborated with Noah Cyrus and Brad Paisley.
