Early life
Joseph Elliott Girardi was born on October 14, 1964, in Peoria, Illinois, to Jerry Girardi, a former blue-collar worker and United States Air Force veteran, and Angela Girardi.
Girardi’s father died of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 81, and his mother died of cancer. John Girardi, George Girardi, Maria Girardi, and Gerald Girardi are Joe’s siblings.
He attended Spalding Academy before attending Northwestern University, where he was a member of the Northwestern Wildcats baseball team and was a two-time All-Big Ten selection as well as a three-time Academic All-America selection.
He was selected as an all-league player while playing summer baseball in college and graduated from Northwestern with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1986.
He was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor for demonstrating a combination of athletic and academic excellence throughout his college career. He was also the first freshman to be elected president of a student body (Alpha Tau Omega).
Career
During his Major League Baseball career (1989–2003), Girardi played as a catcher for the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals. He won three World Series titles with the Yankees in the 1990s.
Girardi was the manager of the New York Yankees from 2008 to 2017, winning the 2009 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He managed the Florida Marlins from 2006 to 2019.
