Early life
Manchin was born on August 24, 1947 in Farmington, West Virginia. He is the second of five children. His parents were John Manchin and Mary. His father was of Italian descent and his mother was a Czechoslovakian immigrant.
His father owned a carpet and furniture store. Both his father and grandfather had served as mayors of Farmington. Manchin was a member of the Friends of Wales Caucus. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University in 1970.
