John Earl Madden, commonly known as John Madden, was born on April 10, 1936, in Austin. He was the son of Earl Russell Madden and Mary Margaret Madden, his father was a machinist and the family immigrated to California when Madden was young.

Madden wanted to be a football player and played football in high school. He played for the Mustangs at Car Poly. He was then drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but during training camp he injured his other knee. As a result, he never got to play professional football.
