Early Life & Education

John ‘Mr. Ibu’ Okafor hails from Nkanu West LG, Enugu State. He was born on October 17, 1961. He has a sister named Queen Chioma Egboh. He passed away after a long battle with illness.

After primary school, in 1974, he moved to Sapele to stay with his brother after his father passed away. In Sapele, he worked menial jobs to pay for school and support his family.

John ‘Mr. Ibu’ Okafor later worked as a hair stylist, ventured into photography and worked in a barrel manufacturing company. After graduating from secondary school, he was accepted into Yola Teachers College but dropped out due to financial difficulties.

He then enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) as soon as he was financially able.

Career

John ‘Mr. Ibu’ Okafor has acted in more than 200 films, including Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu in London (2004), Police Recruit (2003), 9 Wives (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006) and Keziah (2007). All these films have been widely viewed across Nigeria.

He worked at Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS). While there, he was a member of the cast of the soap operas Ogbu Anyanwu and Kwere Kira.

Additionally, John ‘Mr. Ibu’ Okafor was a boxer. He practiced Shotokan Karate for 16 years and earned his black belt in 1983. He is also a member of the Nigerian Karate Federation.

According to him, he was the first instructor to teach Karate in federal government colleges in Nigeria. John ‘Mr. Ibu’ Okafor was a merchant. He collaborated with some of his friends.
