Early life and education
John Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. His father is Ellen Mulaney (née Stanton), a professor at the Pritzker School of Law at Northwestern University, and his mother is Charles W. Mulaney, Jr., a lawyer and partner at Skadden Arps. Both of his parents are Irish Catholics. He has an older sister named Claire Mulaney.
Nora Jennings was a native of Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, who emigrated to the United States, and George J. Bates was a Republican who was mayor and congressman of Salem, Massachusetts. John Mullaney’s maternal great-grandparents were his mother, who gave birth to William H. Bates, a former congressman and his great-uncle.

John Mulaney’s parents graduated from Yale Law School and Georgetown University respectively. He served as an altar boy as a child. He is the third of five children. His siblings include an older brother, an older sister, a younger brother who died in infancy, and a younger sister.
At the age of seven, he joined the Chicago children’s sketch theater “Rugrats”. He attended St. Clement High School. In 2000, he graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory School. John Mulaney then attended Georgetown University, where his parents also graduated. While studying at Georgetown University, he majored in English and minored in theology.

After graduating from Georgetown University, John Mulaney moved to New York City in 2004 to pursue a career in comedy. Comedy Central eventually hired him as an executive assistant. They spent a year working with comedian Nick Kroll to come up with the idea for I Love the 30s, a parody of I Love the 80s.
John Mulaney was working for the network when Dave Chappelle suddenly left. The network had planned to send him to Los Angeles to pick up the tapes of the third season of the Dave Chappelle Show. However, John Mulaney felt that this would “hinder his development as a comedian” and left the network to work independently.
