His father is Ellen Mulaney (née Stanton), a professor at the Pritzker School of Law at Northwestern University, and his mother is Charles W. Mulaney, Jr., a lawyer and partner at Skadden Arps. Nora Jennings was a native of Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, who emigrated to the United States, and George J. Bates was a Republican who was mayor and congressman of Salem, Massachusetts. John Mullaney’s maternal great-grandparents were his mother, who gave birth to William H. Bates, a former congressman and his great-uncle.
