Comedian John Oliver debunked the election results and blamed Katy Perry for Kamala Harris’s loss to Donald Trump.
On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight Since November 10, the host tried to hold back tears when criticizing Trump. When trying to figure out why Harris lost to Trump, he turned his focus to Perry, who supported Harris the day before the election by performing at a rally for her.
“Personally, I’d like to imagine that everything that happened on Tuesday was Katy Perry’s fault because, at Kamala’s Election Night rally, she pulled off this ill-advised cover-up,” he said via Duration.
Oliver then showed a clip of Perry singing a patchy version of Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All,” which includes the lyrics “No matter what they say to me, they can’t take away my dignity.” I.”
“I mean, you’re right, they can’t take away your dignity because you willingly gave it up. I know, I know that she was trying to do a good thing there but why would you trying to cover up Whitney Houston – that voice? ” Oliver then joked.
The host then jokingly compared Perry’s appearance at the rally to singer-songwriter Lee Greenwood at a Trump rally.
“Say what you want about Lee Greenwood – in my case about 18 minutes of rigorously vetted insults – but at least when he performed at Trump rallies, he didn’t try to trying to play Freddie Mercury in ‘Somebody to Love,'” Oliver said.
He then clarified that he didn’t just blame Perry for Harris’ loss, but that it was an easy scapegoat in the situation.
Oliver continued: “Now, would that drunken bachelor’s karaoke night doom Harris’s entire campaign? Probably not. But I feel good thinking so because It’s an easy answer to a difficult question.”
Seriously, Oliver told his audience to give themselves some space to grieve and do what they have to do to take care of themselves during this time.
“Throw your phone into the nearest body of water, scream into a well, punch a tree, curl up into a ball and watch Princess Diary all the way through and at the end, when ‘Miracles Happen’ starts playing, scream, ‘No, they didn’t. Don’t lie to me. People can be sh–s.’ But try not to completely bury yourself in despair,” he shared.
However, he ended the night with one final jab at Perry.
“And don’t just take it from me. Take it from one of the world’s greatest singers being covered by another singer,” he finished.
