John Francis O’Shea (born 30 April 1981) is an Irish professional football manager and former player, known professionally as John O’Shea. He is the current caretaker manager of the Ireland national football team.
He spent the majority of his professional career at Manchester United, helping the club win numerous honours, including five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two Football League Cups, four Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

Early life
John O’Shea was born on 30 April 1981 to Mr and Mrs O’Shea in Waterford, Ireland. He grew up in Waterford before moving to England to pursue his dream of becoming a professional footballer.
From a young age, he developed a love for football and often played the game after school. Recognizing his talent and passion, his parents supported his ambition to play football professionally.
His youth career began in 1989 at the age of eight when he joined Ferrybank AFC. He spent six years there, honing his playing skills. In 1995, he joined Waterford Bohemians and remained at the club until 1998. His outstanding playing ability attracted the attention of talent agents, and he was soon recruited into the Manchester United youth team in 1998.

John O’Shea is one of the most decorated Irish footballers of all time, with 14 winners’ medals. He began his professional football career by joining Manchester United in 1999 at the age of 17. He was initially sent on loan to AFC Bournemouth and Royal Antwerp but soon established himself in the Manchester United first team.
He played 393 games for Manchester United, mainly as a defender and defensive midfielder, and scored a total of 15 goals. During his time at Manchester United, he won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two Football League Cups, four FA Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
In 2011, after spending the majority of his career at Manchester United, O’Shea signed for Sunderland FC, where he spent seven seasons and made 256 appearances, scoring four goals. In 2018, he joined Championship side Reading FC, where he had a short spell, making just nine appearances. O’Shea retired from professional football in May 2019.
After retiring, O’Shea joined the coaching staff of Reading FC and worked with the club until 2021. He later held coaching positions at Stoke City and Birmingham City. His international career began in 1998 with the Republic of Ireland U-16 team.
He then played for the under-21 team and made his senior debut in 2001 against Croatia. O’Shea has played 118 times for the senior team over 17 years, scoring three goals. He played at UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016 and was part of the squad that controversially lost to France in the play-offs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
After retiring from international football, O’Shea began working as Assistant Manager for the U-21 and Senior Teams. His coaching talent was recognised and he was appointed as Interim Manager of the Senior Team on 28 February 2024.
