Early life
John Anthony Randle was born in Mumford, Texas, on December 12, 1967. He grew up in Hearne, Texas. In 1990, he graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a Bachelor’s degree in sociology.
He earned Little All-American honors as a defensive lineman for the Javelinas football team, which won the Division II championship. Ervin, his older brother, was a fullback in the NFL for eight years.
Professional career
Randle was invited to training camp by the Minnesota Vikings and he signed a free agent contract with the team in 1990. For the Minnesota Vikings in 1991, Randle started 8 games and had 8.5 sacks.
He was selected to his first NFL Pro Bowl in 1993 when he finished third in the league in sacks. In 2000, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee selected him as the starting player for the NFL Team of the Decade.
From 2000 to 2001, Randle had eight sacks and 31 tackles for loss for the Vikings. The Vikings released Randle in 2001 and he accepted a contract with the Seattle Seahawks. He had 11 sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2001.
After being injured the previous year, Randle led the Seahawks with seven sacks in 12 games in 2003. Randle retired from professional football in 2004, tied for seventh all-time in sacks with Richard Dent.
