Career

Jolidee Matongo has been politically inclined since his student days. One obvious reason for this is that he was a member of the Soweto Students’ Congress (Sosco) and the Congress of South African Students (Cosas).

In addition, he was appointed as a Strategic Support Advisor in MMC’s Johannesburg Office in charge of finance in 2011. It was this position that took him out of the spotlight in Johannesburg’s leadership circles.

Jolidee Matongo was also a member of the Johannesburg ANC Regional Executive Committee for 18 years. During this time, he was the Head of Communications and Media for the region, where he was also elected Regional Spokesperson for two consecutive terms.

Additionally, a veteran of public service with over 10 years of active service, Jolidee Matongo was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer at the City’s Housing Department.

Jolidee Matongo rose to prominence as the City’s Deputy Director of Youth Development, focusing primarily on youth inclusion and empowerment. He later became a Johannesburg Councillor before being appointed as a Strategic Advisor. As of 10 August 2021, Matongo has been announced as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
