John Francis Bongiovi Jr. was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, to John Francis Bongiovi Sr. and Carol (Sharkey).
His father was a barber and a former Marine, and his mother was a florist and Playboy Bunny who also served in the Marines. He has two brothers, Anthony and Matthew.

In 1989, during the New Jersey Syndicate Tour, Bon Jovi secretly traveled to Las Vegas and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, at the Graceland Wedding Chapel.
They have four children: Stephanie (born 1993), Jesse (born 1995), Jack (born 2002), and Romeo (born 2004). Bon Jovi once lived in Rumson, New Jersey, where he set up the Sanctuary Sound recording studio in the basement of his home. He jokingly calls himself a recovering Catholic.
Bon Jovi has close ties to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and former head coach Bill Belichick. He owns two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and has performed at Gillette Stadium several times.
