Along with Robert Thompson, Venables was just ten years old when they kidnapped and murdered two-year-old Bulger in Liverpool. The case shocked the UK and the world because of the age of the perpetrator and the brutality of the crime.
Both Venables and Thompson were tried and convicted of murder, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. They were sentenced to imprisonment at the Queen’s pleasure, an indeterminate sentence.
In 2001, after serving eight years in juvenile detention, they were released on life licence and given new identities out of concern for their safety.
Venables has had a number of legal problems since then. In 2010, he was convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography, which resulted in a two-year prison sentence. He was paroled but was re-arrested in 2017 for similar offences and sentenced to 40 months in 2018.
Venables remains a controversial figure, with ongoing debate about his rehabilitation and the effectiveness of the justice system in dealing with such cases.
