early life
Jonah Marais was born on June 16, 1998 in Minnesota.
He grew up in Stillwater. His parents are Mr. Timothy and Mrs. Carrie Franchi. He is the second child in the family and has three siblings, namely Zebulon, Esther and Svia Franchi.
He was nicknamed “Marais” after a town his parents used to visit before he was born, called Grand Marais. He was born into a musical family, and everyone in the family had a good voice and sang well.
As Jonah entered his teenage years, he developed a stronger interest in music and began to teach himself to sing and play instruments. In sixth grade, he made his debut at a talent show. He covered John Lennon’s song “Imagine”.
In 2014, he opened an account on YouNow and began posting covers of popular songs and his own compositions. His songs became popular on the platform, and by the summer of 2014, he had more than 10,000 followers. Out of his love for music, he decided to drop out of school to pursue a music career full-time. He was in the tenth grade at the time.
While pursuing music, Jonah Marais was also interested in baseball. He played baseball since he was a child and joined his school’s baseball team during his freshman year of high school. He stopped playing baseball after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead, he focused more on music to deal with the sadness that enveloped him at the time.

After graduating from high school, Jonah Marais had the opportunity to perform his first live show at Digifest in 2015. He sang in front of an excited crowd of over seven thousand people. He participated in Digitour. It was here that he met his future bandmates Zach Herron, Corbin Besson, Daniel Seavey and Jack Avery, who were pursuing their solo careers at the time.
On July 7, 2015, he released his first single, “I Meant It”. The song was a big hit, prompting him to shoot a video a month later. After months of hard work, he released his first EP. The album, titled “When The Daylight’s Gone”, was released in April 2016. A few weeks before that, he released the title song of the EP, “War Paint”, giving fans a preview of what to expect.
Riding on the success of his EP, Jonah Marais followed up the latter half of the year with another hit single titled Next Ex-Girlfriend. A few days after the song was released, he joined the band Why Don’t We, confirming what music bloggers had long speculated. His bandmates are his new friends Zach, Jack, Daniel and Corbyn. These five artists decided to combine their talents to create timeless music. Jonah Marais made this decision because he believes that great art is created through collaboration. He officially joined the band on September 27, 2016.
Since joining the band, he has produced and released two studio albums and five EPs. He recorded their debut single, Taking You, with his bandmates and released it for fans to enjoy on October 20, 2016. Their debut EP, Only the Beginning, was released a month later – on November 25. Jonah Marais also lent his vocals to four other EP projects, namely Something Different (April 2017), Why Don’t We Just (June 2017), Invitation (September 2017), and A Why Don’t We Christmas (November 2017).
Working with the band helped Jonah build his influence in the music industry as it helped him gain more fans. This is why he and his bandmates signed a record deal with Atlantic Records in September 2017. He has embarked on several headlining tours since he became a hot star.
As a hard-working musician, he did his part to ensure that the band’s albums, 8 Letters and The Good Times and The Bad Ones, exceeded the expectations of their fans. These two albums earned the band even more fans as music lovers around the world enjoyed their songs.
