Joseph Yobo was born and raised in Kono, Rivers State in Nigeria on September 6, 1980. He left Nigeria to join Standard Liege in 1998.

He appeared in his first team in 2000 and made 46 appearances. He was then bought by Marseille in 2001. While completing his primary and secondary education, he realized his love and great skills in Football.
He then signed for Michelin-Harcourt at the age of 16 in 1996 and then joined club Standard Liege in 1997.
