She is known for her controversial departure after being sacked as Director General of the Niger Delta Development Commission in April 2020.

Early life
Joy Nunieh was raised by her father; the late Senator Cyrus Nunieh from Beeri, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, after her birth on November 11, 1963.
Her father, who died in 2018, was widely known in the Niger Delta region as the first lawyer in the entire Ogoni Land region. The late Senator Cyrus Nunieh was also a Senator for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.

Joy Nunieh also spent her entire childhood in Rivers State and is loved by many high-ranking dignitaries in the state. Recently, Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State intervened following the invasion of her residence, amid allegations of scandals at the NDDC.
Education
Joy Nunieh completed her basic and primary education at a very young age. Due to her impressive intelligence, her teachers recommended her to a prestigious secondary school. Her grades were also satisfactory after the SSCE results were released at that time.
This made it easy for the former NDDC managing director to gain admission to study Law at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology; obtaining his degree within the stipulated time of the course.
Joy Nunieh then moved to Lagos and studied at the Nigerian Law School before being called to the Legal profession in 1990. However, she did not serve her NYSC after being posted to Kwara State.
Career
Joy Nunieh worked as a private contractor for Chevron Nigeria Limited in 1989, before signing on with Shell as an independent contractor in 2008. Efficiency and the ability to manage resources provided are her greatest strengths, along with decades of experience in the Oil and Gas industry.
She also ran for senator in 2011 under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), but did not win the election.
In 2012, Nunieh’s profile was recognized when she was appointed as National Coordinator by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), with an existing relationship with Shell.
Joy Nunieh joined President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet in 2019 after being assigned the role of Director-General of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). However, her tenure was cut short when she was fired in April 2020 for neglecting the Youth Service programme.
Joy Nunieh’s Controversy
Shortly after her replacement, Kemebradikumo Pondei, was announced, a list of allegations was released by a critical Joy Nunieh, accusing Godswill Akpabio of attempting to sexually harass her. She also claimed that the former governor had tried to coax her into taking an oath of secrecy.
Joy Nunieh, who appeared in several television interviews at the time, also revealed that the Commission headquarters was not connected to the public electricity supply due to a diesel supply agreement from Godswill Akpabio’s girlfriend.
She also accused the Minister of ordering the blowing up of pipelines in the Niger Delta region as well as embezzling billions of Naira from the Commission.
Personal life
Outside of her official duties, Joy Nunieh has a private life. She remained in the shadows until scandals broke out in 2020, about events that occurred within the NDDC.
She is currently referred to as ‘Miss’ Joy Nunieh, which most likely indicates that she is still single. However, during an exchange of accusations with Godswill Akpabio, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio revealed that she has been divorced four times, saying that Joy Nunieh has a personality problem.
Currently, she is not married or in any marriage.
