Jujutsu Kaisen: Star-shaped plasma vessel explained
Lord Tengen is an ancient wizard with immortality who has existed since the Nara period. Although Tianyuan can live indefinitely, their physical bodies will still age and change over time. Every five hundred years, when Tianyuan reaches a certain stage of immortality, their bodies will initiate a transformation process in an attempt to evolve into a higher being. However, this transformation comes at a cost—the user’s sense of self and will to survive diminish, leaving them nothing more than a shell of their former selves.
Because of the potential disaster this evolution could bring to Jiu-Jitsu High School and the world, Tianyuan and the higher-ups of the organization are worried. To prevent such a future, Tianyuan must merge with capable stellar plasma vessels every evolutionary cycle. By doing so, Tengen can rewrite their body’s information and stop evolving until the next 500 years.
The Star Plasma Vessels are young women who have the potential to help Tian Yuan regain immortality through merging. Riko Tenten made her debut in Jujutsu Express Season 2 and showed great potential as a ship. Therefore, Tengen sends Gojo and Shimoto to retrieve her so that he can merge with her and remain immortal.
It’s worth noting that not all ships are created equal, as each has a different level of potential compared to other ships. Additionally, the ships have the ability to communicate with each other even if someone has merged with Tianzheng.
What is the Star Plasma Vessel in Jujutsu Kaisen?
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Jujutsu High School has a powerful magician, Master Tengen, who is responsible for maintaining the barrier around the two schools. Although Master Tianyuan is over 1,200 years old, he is not immortal in the traditional sense. Instead, every five hundred years, when his body begins to deteriorate, he fuses with a being known as the “Star Plasma Vessel” to “rewrite his body’s information.”
This fusion process allows Master Tianyuan to continuously refresh his own cells and extend his life. However, the disadvantage of the chosen Star Plasma Vessel is that fusion with the Tianyuan Master is inherently fatal to them. According to the Jujutsu Kaisen fan page, Star Plasma Vessels are young women who possess the necessary potential to facilitate the restoration of immortality by merging with their user (in this case, Master Tengen).
Each ship has different levels of potential, and interestingly, they can communicate with each other even if someone has fused with the Immortal. In the original Jujutsu Kaisen manga series, there were only two known star plasma vessels: Yuki Tsukumo, the super magician, and Riko Amanai, who became the main focus of the anime’s second season.

Who is Riko Tenuchi in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2?
In Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Riko Tenuchi appears as a 14-year-old student attending Rennao Girls’ Junior High School and serves as a star plasma container. Known for her outspoken and feisty personality, Riko is deeply committed to her role as a vessel, viewing it more as an obligation than a personal choice. For Master Tianyuan, she is willing to sacrifice her life.
Riko’s dedication to her role may have stemmed from her childhood trauma. Unfortunately, her parents died in a traffic accident when she was young, and she was raised by her guardian Misato Kuroi, with whom she had a close relationship. In the second season of the Jujutsu Kaisen TV series produced by MAPPA, Riko Tenuchi is voiced by Japanese actress Anna Nagase.
Anime fans may know Nagase from her roles as Ushio in Summertime Render (2022), Hack in Yurei Deco (2020), and Tsumugi in the Ippon Again series (2023) .
