Growing up in Temple Hills, Maryland, Peterson attended Crossland High School, where he excelled in football. His exceptional skills earned him recognition as the Most Valuable Player of the 1996 Chesapeake Classic, demonstrating his natural talent from an early age.
To pursue his education, Peterson attended Valley Forge Military College and Academy for two years before transferring to Michigan State University.

Peterson’s professional career began when the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft.
As a rookie, he quickly established himself as a formidable player, starting seven of 13 games and tallying 47 tackles, four clearances and two interceptions.
Peterson’s stellar performances earned him his first Pro Bowl selection in 2002 after making 94 tackles. In six seasons with the 49ers, he amassed 394 tackles, 21.5 sacks and five interceptions in 79 games, earning two Pro Bowl selections.
