Early life and education
Carly Uchis, born Carly-Marina Loaiza, was born on July 17, 1994 in the beautiful town of Alexandria, Virginia. Her father left Pereira, Colombia in the late 1980s and fate brought him to the United States, where he met her mother, who had children from a previous marriage. She is their only child.
While attending TC Williams High School (now Alexandria City High School), Kali Uchis excelled in musical skills, including playing piano and saxophone. She also expressed her creativity by making experimental short films in a photo lab, often skipping classes for which she was kicked out of her home and had to live in her car.
Her interest in photography eventually led her to create artwork for her mixtapes. She wrote songs on a keyboard in her free time, which were later included on her lo-fi mixtape Drunken Babble. Kali Uchis spent her summers in Colombia with her father, uncle and aunt, and her school days with her mother and older siblings, who supported her musical dreams.
Personal life
On Friday, July 23, 2020, Don Toliver and Carly Uchis went public with their relationship, sending fans and the media into a frenzy. In an interview with W Magazine, Don Toliver assured fans that they were not into excessive PDA, saying, “We’re not crazy public figures, we just feel”
Previously, the single and music video “Drugs N Hella Melodies” jointly released by the two was officially released in June of the same year and has attracted a large number of fans.
Before dating Don Toliver, Kali Uchis was previously linked to Yung Gleesh and Omar Apollo, but her love for music transcended all of her past relationships.
While her music is primarily inspired by 1960s soul, R&B and doo-wop, her early inspirations include jazz icons Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
Profession
After graduation, Kali Uchis entered the music industry with her debut mixtape, Drunken Babble, which blended genres from the early 2000s such as reggae, doo-wop and R&B. Kali Uchis’ artistic diversity gained wider recognition when she lent her vocals and sang on Gorillaz’ fifth studio album, Humanz , where she worked with a wide range of musicians including Diplo, Tyler, the Creator, Kaytranada and BadBadNotGood on songs like “She’s My Collar” and “Ticker Tape.”
From August to October 2017, she embarked on a tour that began at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco and ended at the Montreal Pop Festival, where her popularity and recognition continued to grow. Kali Uchis also performed on Juanes’ El Ratico, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Record of the Year that same year.
In 2019, Kali Uchis collaborated with American R&B band Free Nationals on the late Mac Miller’s posthumous single “Time”, demonstrating her ability to adapt and thrive in new musical territory. She then released the single “Solita” in December 2019, which was originally intended to be the lead single from her second studio album, but was later removed and included as a bonus track on the vinyl edition.
The collaborative artist also lent her vocals to Kaytranada’s single “10%” in December 2019, which won Best Dance Recording at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Kali Uchis’s creative side was on full display when she remixed Little Dragon’s “Are You Feeling Sad?”
