Early life
Michael Thomas Berthold and Laura Campbell gave birth to Kate McKinnon Berthold on January 6, 1984.
She was born in the town of Sea Cliff on Long Island, New York and has a younger sister named Emily Lynne Berthold.
Their father, Michael, died when she was eighteen and the two sisters were raised in Sea Cliff.

Kate McKinnon graduated from North Shore High School in 2002 and went on to study theater at Columbia University. She co-founded the Tea Party, a musical improv comedy group, while at Columbia.
